|JOE’s HAWAIIAN TOUR SHORT SNORTER - July 13, 1944
1928 D $2 RED SEAL UNITED STATES NOTE
Serial # C50613812A
It appears that this was Joe’s Short Snorter, which his friends signed before he left for his Hawaiian Tour. A $2 Short
Snorter is much less common than the $1 Variety. Given the near even signature distribution of men and women, an
educated guess would put the signing of this note at a farewell party in Joe’s honor. Another guess would be that the
obverse was first signed and, as the evening festivities progressed, the reverse was signed. The serving of spirits in
1944 would explain the current difficulty in deciphering the historical signatures to be due to the difficulty of the signer
in signing his or her name after ingestion of alcoholic refreshments. Nevertheless, it looks like this Short Snorter
commemorated one great party!
Nine of his friends (four females and five males) signed the bill on the obverse as follows:
Dorothy Fenerly E. H. Martyno Y2 7-13-44
Raymond A. Stevens Ha 7-13-44 Good Luck Margie
(aloha) Bella Kelly
Wade L. Wonik 7-13-44 (Stonehocker The Mile High be)
Rebecca Garonima P. H. Syerzanourley N. C.
Five signatures on the reverse can barely be made out. These include: "Hawaiian Tour Joe"
Steve Fone Rends S ????? Albert F?????
Jack O. Hie
(signed in pencil) William Russio, U.S.M.C.
