5 FRANC BANK OF ALGERIA ALGERIAN SHORT SNORTER
Series C.11-8-1941.C. - Serial Number F.5387 749
The inscription on this short snorter reads:  "With Best Love Jean        Dick   North Africa    Oct. 18, 1943"
The Allied invasion of Algeria was successfully completed in early 1943, with American, Canadian, and British troops
participating. It is clear that Dick sent this to his sweetheart Jean to reassure her of his continuing love and devotion
from North Africa on October 18, 1943. My guess, from the term “Best Love” is that a British Soldier sent this bill to his
sweetheart. It would be nice to know if Dick survived the War, returned to his sweetheart Jean, married, and raised a
family.  Or did a tragedy intervene that doomed their affection?  But without more information, the currency’s history
(other than its use during World War II) will be forever clouded in the unknown. -PM
