Despite their numerically small and ill-equipped armed forces, Greece contributed decisively to Allied War efforts in
World War II.  Greece sided with the Allies at the beginning of the war and refused to give in to Italian demands. Italy
invaded Greece on October 28, 1940.  Greek troops repelled the invaders after a bitter struggle. On May 20, 1941,
German, Bulgarian, and Italian troops attacked again and were successful this time.  A bitter occupation followed, which
devastated the Greek economy.
