TWENTY FRANCS NOUMEA  SHORT SNORTER
Serial Number: FT 014405
This is a crisp World War II 20 Francs Bank of Indo-China issue for Noumea.  It was originally part of a roll of Short
Snorters as evidenced by the remnants of cellophane tape at both ends of the note. During World War II, French South
Pacific colonies (consisting of New Caledonia, French Polynesia, and the New Hebrides) joined with the Free French
forces and became vital Allied bases in the Pacific Ocean.  A major naval base was built up by American Allied Forces in
New Caledonia.  Noumea (the capital of New Caledonia) served as a United States Navy and Army Headquarters during
World War II.  Noumea has a protected deep water harbor and, thus, was used as a repair base for damaged Allied and
American ships.
