The Short Snorter Project
Robert James "Bob" Marguerite was a Consolidated PBY-5A
Catalina Co-Pilot in the U. S. Navy Black Cat Squadron VP-54.
He flew with Pilot Peter "Press" Maravich ("Pistol" Pete's
dad). He also flew with Pilot John Love, who later became the
governor of Colorado. Early in the war, their squadron flew
bombing missions at night. Later in the war, General Douglas
McArthur turned them into an air-sea rescue plane squadron.
They rescued over 250 pilots. According to Bob Marguerite's
son, Dan, Press Maravich always had Bob do the take off and
landings in the water. When trying to gain enough speed for
take off from the water, the swells would pound the plane so
hard that many of the rivets would pop out of the plane. Upon
return to base they would have to re-rivet the plane.
